Planting Season Is Here: Welcome to the Garden Club's Favorite Time of Year!

30 May 2026 7:18 AM | JoEllen Edson (Administrator)

This is the season we've been dreaming about all winter. The frost warnings are fading, garden centers are buzzing, and every sunny day feels like an invitation to head outside and dig in.

If you've found yourself spending "just 15 minutes" in the garden only to look up three hours later, you're not alone. Planting season has a way of making time disappear. One minute you're planting a tomato, and the next you're redesigning an entire flower bed.

This is also the season of dirt under the fingernails, muddy boots by the door, and the satisfying ache that comes from a day well spent outdoors. Consider those smudges and sore muscles badges of honor—they're signs that something beautiful is growing.

A few friendly reminders as we dive into our busiest gardening weeks:

Stretch before you start. Your plants aren't the only things waking up after winter! A few minutes of stretching can save your back, shoulders, and knees from reminding you the next morning exactly how many bags of compost you moved.

Don't forget the sunscreen. Cloudy days can be deceiving, and gardeners often lose track of time. Protect your skin so you can enjoy many seasons to come.

Hydrate like your plants do. Keep a water bottle nearby and take regular breaks, especially during warm afternoons.

Leave a little room for surprises. Every season brings unexpected volunteers, self-seeded flowers, and happy accidents. Sometimes the plants that weren't part of the plan become the stars of the garden.

Plant for the pollinators. Bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds are hard at work this time of year. Native plants, flowering herbs, and pesticide-free gardens help support these important visitors.

Document the journey. Today’s tiny seedlings will soon become towering tomatoes and overflowing flower beds. Take photos often—you'll be amazed at how much growth happens in just a few weeks. It's a great way to document season to season and year to year, as most progress is slow. Plus, it's a great excuse to show off your garden to friends, family, and fellow garden club members!

Most importantly, enjoy the process. Gardens aren't built in a day, and perfection isn't the goal. Whether you're planting a single container or transforming an entire landscape, every seed sown and every weed pulled is part of the journey.

Here's to long days in the garden, full watering cans, abundant blooms, and just enough dirt under our fingernails to prove we've been having fun.

Happy planting!
